We saw some Wallobees alongside the road (hopping, still alive). They look like small kangaroos to the untrained eye, except they’re kind of blackish in color and fairly small – about like a beagle or so. We looked for Koalas, but he said that they’re very reclusive and difficult to spot, and it was unlikely that we’d see any in the wild. This proved accurate as well.
We also saw a sign warning us about Bandicoots, which we’d never heard of. They’re another marsupial. In Australia, in addition to endangered species, there are “reportable species”, which means that they’re so rare that if you see them you’re supposed to call the Forest Service so they can be aware of it. Bandicoots apparently fall into this category. Like the Koalas, we had nothing to report.
While at “morning tea”, I heard an unsual bird call. I tried to get it on the video, and later we saw the kukoborro bird sitting on a fence. It was the only thing to hold still long enough for a photograph, other than this enormous St. Andrew’s Spider.
No, they’re not poisonous. We didn’t take any chances, though. Good thing the camera’s got a telephoto lens available!
