This is a suburb of Melbourne. It was an 1850’s gold rush town built by the Chinese that kind of languished for a long time, then the hippies bought it in the 50’s and early 60’s. When he was a child, Simon the bus driver remembered going “hippie watching” in the car with his parents. They’d come down to buy the jelly, macramé, etc. that they made. He said that there was one elderly woman who sold St. Andrews Cakes (I think it’s a cookie, actually) that were especially popular. When he was older, he learned what the secret ingredient was and why so many people liked them. Whenever the police came and tried to close her down, her friends would whisk her off into the woods. So she wasn’t ever caught.
