This was one of the things that blew our minds today – we were at the southernmost point of Australia – a mere 3,398 miles from the South Pole!! This point was discovered by the Dutch originally, and the name means “Lioness”. You get a real sense of isolation, even today, and I can’t imagine how solitary it would have been when constructed in the 1890’s.
One of the other cool things is that this is the point where the Southern (Pacific) Ocean and the Indian Ocean meet. The waves and currents are pretty strong, and there are all kinds of signs warning about rogue waves that will suddenly come up and wash you out to sea. There’s also a memorial about a military ship that was overturned by such a wave in 1945.
The scenery was spectacular. It’s a long ways from North Carolina and we never thought that we’d be in such a spot.
