The area around Sydney feels very “Lake Lure” or “Blowing Rock”. (“Mountain Park” for those of you in Oklahoma). Fairly small houses, many of which you’d think are vacation homes although he says they’re occupied full time. They sit RIGHT ON the road, usually with the other end hanging off a cliff and sometimes have rather unique parking alongside the road and also hanging off a cliff.
As noted before, the closer you are to the water, the more expensive the real estate. Here, there weren’t any slips for the numerous boats, but instead everything anchored to buoys in the various harbors. No point eating up all that real estate with boat storage!
At one point along the beach we saw a couple out in about ankle deep water with what looked to be pieces of pipe about 2 inches across. Barry told us they were digging “Pippies”, which are small mussel-like creatures about the size of a 50 cent piece. The things they had were plungers; they’d feel for the pippies with their toes, then stick this down and pull up, sucking them out of the sand. They can then either be eaten or used as fish bait.
